At a loss for a blog topic this morning, I went and looked at the MMO Champion front page. A few of us have already speculated PvE esports were coming, and guess what?

World of Warcraft esports is expanding into the fast-paced, highly competitive world of Mythic Keystone dungeons with the Mythic Dungeon Invitational. We’re looking for the best of the best from around the world to battle it out for a share of $100,000.

If you want to read the details, you’ll find them here.

It was only a matter of time before PvE was monetised. You only have to look at the amount of long term investment being shoved into the project to grasp that. Using dungeons, of course, is an act of genius. Opening it up to everybody currently playing is probably the bigger master-stroke. Suddenly, you don’t need L33t PvP Skillz just the ability to demolish a dungeon in the shortest time possible. Plus, its a fabulous way to showcase Legion content in front of a captive esports audience. There is literally no way in which this entire venture is not made of win.

If it is successful, undoubtedly the prize pool will drive more people to play Warcraft. It will focus fresh attention and effort into improving dungeon design. It will encourage more people to raid for the best gear. Yup, Warcraft PvE as an esport is literally the best thing that Activision Blizzard have ever done with the IP, and it is amazing it has taken this long for them to monetise such previously untapped potential. Assuming this is a massive success (and why would it not be?) there’s a new, sure fire way for the dedicated to make even more money out of playing in Azeroth.

I wish all those who attempt to do just that the best of luck in their endeavours.

  1. I think its taken them a long time because Blizzard knows it has one shot to get the esport side of anything right. So this PV esport has it roots in Proving Grounds and Challenge Mode – which lead to M+ and now esports.

The question should really be, what does Blizzard have in game today as a live pilot that we are overlooking…
